If you’re wondering whether you can use MDF outside , you can’t go wrong with the exterior-grade version. It’s waterproof, but can still expand and contract with moisture. If your deck is frequently exposed to rain or snow, you’ll want to choose the exterior-grade version. For most outdoor uses, however, the exterior-grade product is sufficient. Otherwise, you’ll have to choose the appropriate finish and protect it from damage. One way to protect MDF from moisture is to coat it with a layer of polyurethane. This will protect the wood from rotting, but it’s not a permanent fix. Rainwater and moisture are the two main culprits of the decay of wood. Once MDF becomes wet, it will expand, which will soften it and make it more susceptible to warping. The resulting warping and sagging will eventually render the board useless.
